Jacques Chailley was born on the 24 March 1910, into a music family, he was a student of Gustave Cohen at the Sarbonne, of Henri Busser at the Conservatoire and was a private pupil of Nadia Boulanger and Claude Delvincourt. He trained as a conductor with Pierre Monteux and Willem Mengelberg and studied Musicology with A. Pirro, Yv. Rokseth and A. Smijers. He was Secretary-General and the Assistant Director of the Conservatoire (1937), professor of ensemble singing at the Sorbonne and Director of the institute of Musicology at the University of Paris (1952). A. Ph.D., he held numerous positions of responsibility until his retirement in 1979. Since then, he has concentrated on composing.
